Most games are just for diversion: win or lose, fun is foremost. There are also more competitive games that regale the conqueror, and rebuff the conquered. Then there is a sadistic subset of games that dole out punishment to every combatant equally, regardless of achievement. It should be safe to assume that such games are not at all enjoyable, but the record shows that no participant ever remembers playing such a game... however, they do remember sleeping underneath a ping-pong table.
